Spotlight on Business

The Rusty Knife

Shannon Russell

When a friend suggested that Emile and Rana Mogannam visit the Arnold area for a mountain get away, the couple had no idea the experience would leave such a lasting impression.   Looking across Alpine lake for the first time fifteen years ago, Emile was overwhelmed by the breathtaking beauty.  He knew from that moment on that he wanted to live and die here.  Ever since that first adventure, Emile, Rana, and their four children, Hanna, Emile, Jr., Shannon and Ishaq have been coming to the Ebbetts Pass Corridor on a regular basis.  At first they rented a cabin from their pharmacist friend who let them use the house whenever it was free.  Then when an opportunity came to purchase, they bought a home of their own.

Both Emile and Rana have extensive entrepreneurial experience, and have run many successful businesses in the Bay area.  Since Emile knew he wanted to relocate to the Arnold area, he wanted to apply that knowledge to a business in Arnold.  The cutlery business provided that opportunity, and earlier this year the “The Rusty Knife” was born.  Emile says his secret to growing a company from the ground up is ‘hard work’ and knows that in Arnold there will be no exception to that rule.

To stay sharp, The Rusty Knife is open from 9am-5pm seven days a week.  They specialize in cutlery sales, sharpening, restaurant exchange & advice.  They are located at 2275 Highway 4, Arnold, CA 95223, right next to SNAC.  Phone number is (209) 795-0444,  and web address is www.therustyknife.com. Come on in and take a look!

Bruce and Wendi Davison dreamt of owning a bed and breakfast for over ten years.  Both were in the banking industry, Wendi a Senior Vice President for Wachovia working in the Small Business Lending closing department, and Bruce an SVP in marketing and sales. Yet, their vision stayed at the forefront of their minds and they began to work towards their goal.

First, Bruce went to culinary school to fulfill his true passion for cooking and Wendi used her expertise in lending to find financing.  Then in 2009, Wendi and Bruce began their search.  They discovered a listing in a town called Arnold not far from Roseville where they lived.  When they visited the area they fell in love, and not long after purchased the Black Bear Inn.  The bed and breakfast has five comfortable rooms with huge flat screen TV’s, king beds, private bathrooms, and mountain décor.  A great room with vaulted ceilings, log beams, wood floors and fireplace provide a gathering area.  Wine and cheese are served regularly.  Since Bruce is a professional chef, the couple can also cater to the guests desires.  They provide cuisine and dining choices for breakfast and dinner.  The facility and its impeccable landscaping is also a great place for weddings.

The Davison’s are proud to live in Arnold, and plan to market the area accordingly to grow their business.  They are big on partnering with local companies and regularly refer customers to other restaurants, retail stores, and to the many natural recreational areas Arnold has to offer.  They also look forward to using the Black Bear Inn facility for local events, to include a movie screening of “Nominated” in September, and a local chef’s competition sometime in November.   They are located at 1343 Oak Circle.  Learn more about them by visiting the facility or website at www.ArnoldBlackBearInn.com and give them a call at 209-795-8999 when guests are in town!

Our Mission

The Greater Arnold Business Association is a non-profit association of businesses in the greater Arnold area, working together for the betterment of the business community, its residents and vistors.

Welcome to Arnold
Highway Four Sign

The Greater Arnold area stretches approximately 47 miles along a section of California Scenic Highway 4 in the Central Sierra from Murphys over Ebbetts Pass. It includes the communities of Forest Meadows, Hathaway Pines, Avery, Arnold, Dorrington, Camp Connell, Bear Valley and Lake Alpine. General membership meetings are held bimonthly at various locations.

With Lake Tahoe to the north and Yosemite National Park to the south, the town of Arnold boasts a truly central location in the Sierra. At the 4,000 foot elevation, you have the unique opportunity to pursue a wide and varied roster of activities year round. You can, literally, golf in the morning and ski all afternoon, and with excellent highway access. In addition to the attributes of mild climate and year-round recreation, Arnold is also the perfect place for an inexpensive family vacation and is just a three hour drive from the Bay Area. Lodging options include Bed and Breakfast Inns, reasonably priced and comfortable motels and year-round vacation cabin rentals, especially popular with families.

Lake Scene at Sunset

Arnold serves as a gateway to the Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Stanislaus National Forest, Bear Valley winter and summer recreation areas and the spectacular wilderness areas beyond. Visitors find the relaxed pace, clean mountain air, starry nights and friendliness of the townsfolk make Arnold an excellent “home base”. Many a visitor has turned resident after a few vacations here.

Most businesses are family owned, so you get the personal service not often found elsewhere. The available goods and services delightfully surpass expectation.

The town of Arnold is also host to many one-of-a-kind events such as the Sierra Nevada Logging Jamboree, the Arnold Independence Day Parade, seasonal crafts fairs and significant sporting events (see calendar of special events).
